We think that these logs that I cut from poles available at a garden centre are a nice touch.  If only we had thought of it at the planning stage I would have made the rear shelf wider.  They are set in mortar.
A few rocks have been placed so that when the pebbles are put in to make the shallow beach they won't fall into the deeper areas.  We bought our rocks from a quarry where they charge by weight.   Much cheaper than a garden centre.

Incorporating rocks, logs and broken paving cut into 'bricks'

I was quite concerned about using mortar in and around the pond as everything I had read suggested that it would cause problems for wildlife for some considerable time.  We have had no such problems.
